Mental Health & Addictions: Help is Here Wellington

Why Might Someone Work With a Therapist?

Mental Health Therapists at the MFFHT have considerable education and specialized training in the area of mental health, and other important aspects of well-being. Therapists play an integral part in assisting in the improvement of mental health and social well-being.  Therapists help you to cope with issues in your life that cause you emotional distress or to help you to monitor and self-manage a mental health issue.

Our therapists are educated and trained in mental health to deal with a wide range of issues.

Three major purposes of therapy are:

  1. to enhance the problem-solving, coping and developmental capacities of people

  2. to promote the effective and humane operation of the systems that provide people with resources and services

  3. to link people with systems that provide them with resources, services, and opportunities

Some common reasons to see a Mental Health Therapist include:

Depression

Stress, Anxiety

Bereavement, Loss, Grief

Relationship problems

Work-related problems

Family problems

Trauma

Self-Esteem

Caregiver Stress

Substance Use

Eating Disorder

How Long And How Often?

Each therapy session is about 50 minutes long, via telephone, online secure video, or in-person. The therapists typically meet with clients once every two weeks.

The mental health therapy service is not a crisis service and therapists are not able to support clients on an as-needed basis between appointments.

If you are experiencing a mental health crisis, or are unable to cope with the stresses in your life, services such as the following are equipped to support urgent mental health needs:

What Does a Typical Course of Mental Health Therapy Look Like?

At the first session, the therapist and client develop an understanding of what the client’s needs are, what their hopes are from accessing therapy, and co-create goals with the therapist that would serve them. Ongoing sessions involve tracking how things are going and focusing on specific goals that appeal to the client for their overall progress toward their preferences for wellness. The therapist and client regularly evaluate and adjust the direction of the sessions as needed. Concluding therapy will occur at session 6, or less if the client’s goals and hopes are being met. The option to extend beyond 6 sessions is decided between the client and therapist if the client needs extended support to manage risk in their life or to maintain their wellbeing.

How Long Do People Wait To See A Therapist?

Community demand for mental health therapy support from the Family Health Team is significant. Prospective clients can expect to wait for 3 months to meet with a therapist.
